The creche program for the children of women prisoners was started in the year 1999. Committed teachers taught the children the alphabets, moral stories, rhymes and numerals. Nutritious supplementary food was provided to the children. New Life mobilized toys and play materials to bring enjoyment for the children inside the prison campus. Books were also given. On selected festival days like New Year day, Independence Day and the Republic Day, cultural programs and sports were conducted for the children. With the experience gained and lessons learnt, we thought of running the program outside the prison as follow up of children would be easy.
Starting from the year 2004, the programme with the fund support of Terre des Hommes-Netherlands www.terredeshommes.nl , four ELCs (Early Learning Centre) are run in Ariyamangalam, Uppuparai, Kaja Nagar and Kaja Pettai the urban slums of Tamil Nadu. During 2008, the program was expanded and we started functioning in Sathyamoorthy Nagar and Kodappu. The center in Kaja Nagar was shifted to Vamadam as there was displacement in Kaja Nagar due to the Four Lane Bridge construction in NH45B.
The program ensures that Childhood of children in Juvenile Delinquency and in conflict with law restored and the quality life of their families improved. We see that the
