New Life, a Society working for the development of women and children was registered under the Societies Act, 1860 in the year 1993.

Mission:
To bring the poor women and their children into the main stream of economy and thereby make them participate in the process of nation building. New Life is committed in building up a society based on equity and social justice where women and children are the leaders of social change of better tomorrow. 

Vision:
To retain our niche as an institution builder in the development sector, focusing on the basic needs of poor women and Children from low – income households.

PROJECTS OF NEW LIFE:
In its endeavour to develop the socio-economic status of women and children, New Life undertook the following projects and programmes during the last 15 years:

Ensured Childhood to the Children of People in Conflict with Law in Trichy District: The project aims at improving the lifestyles of the target families and ensuring childhood to the children of people who are indulged in activities that conflict with law.

Rehabilitation of Prisoners: The organization gives psychological counseling to the families of the inmates. The inmates are also trained in income generation activities like poly bag sugarcane nursery, vermi compost production, etc which gives them confidence to face their life once they come out of the prison. Besides this education support is being provided to the wards of the inmates.

POONJOLAI – The Home for Children: A home for the deserving children who are orphaned, semi-orphaned, deserted, extremely poor or whose parent is inside the prison is run. Children are taken care of in the home by providing health and education supports to them. The children are made to feel at home by the affectionate and tender care given to them by the team of New Life.

Go to School Programme: Children of age 6-14 are motivated to go to schools regularly under this programme. Motivation camps are conducted and regular follow ups are made to ensure the drop out reduces. The children who dropped out from their education for want of financial support are supported by mobilizing funds from individuals and local clubs.

Rehabilitation of Child Labour: The children who are engaged as labourers in agricultural activities, mat weaving, waste paper collecting, food processing and other industries are admitted to the special schools run for them and are motivated to learn. After a year or two, based on their capability to cope with other children they are admitted to regular schools.

Special Seminar for Child Labour: Special seminars were conducted to the child labourers. The programme was jointly organized by New Life, Regional Directorate Central Board for Workers Education, Madurai. The programme motivates the children to continue their studies. Motivating competitions, games and film shows are conducted. Eminent persons from Human Resource, Education and Psychological sector are invited to motivate the children.

Livelihood Promotion Programme: In the path of achieving its aim to mainstream the women, New Life’s Livelihood Promotion Program plays a major role. The organization helps its self help group members to mobilize funds from various nationalized banks and other funding agencies. This has motivated the women to either start their own micro-enterprise or utilise the amount as working capital for their existing enterprises.

Micro Insurance: The lives of the poor women and their counterparts who are engaged in risk bearing coolie works are insured against risk. The organization works in collaboration with ICICI Prudential Life Insurance Co. Ltd., Life Insurance Corporation of India Ltd., and HDFC Standard Life Insurance Co. Ltd, United India Insurance Co. Ltd., Star Health Insurance Alliance, etc.

Organic Farming: Farmers are grouped for practising the principles of organic cultivation for sustaining their farm operations. The farmers so grouped are trained in organic farming principles by the staff for producing chemical free organic food. 

Adult Literacy Program: The illiterate masses are taught reading in priority to writing, which enables them to lead their daily life in a more eased manner. The adult literacy program in the local language Tamil with specially designed user-friendly software developed by the Tata Consultancy Services (TCS). The program is facilitated by the staff/volunteers of New Life.

Health Program: The members are given subsidized consultation by the Physician in our Board and a Gynecologist on obtaining the Health Card issued by the organization. Besides this, health camps are conducted in coordination with the leading physicians and hospitals.

Vocational Trainings: The women members and the inmates of the prison are given trainings on Poly-Bag sugarcane nursery, fabric painting, tailoring, glass painting, soap powder making, phenyl making, cleaning powder making, candle making, vermi compost, etc. These trainings have helped the women to come out of their homes and start ventures on their own.

Achievements of the year 2007-2008:
Ensured Childhood to the Children of People in Conflict with Law in Trichy District: During the current year two more early childhood education centers are established in Sathyamoorthy Nagar and Kodappu. The center in Kaja Nagar was shifted to Vamadam as there was displacement in Kaja Nagar due to the Four Lane Bridge Construction in NH45B. The programme is supported by Terre des Hommes, Netherlands. On the whole 150 children are benefited by the centers, while the project aims at improving the lifestyles of the target 741 families. 58 children were admitted to standard 1 in June 2007 from the centers. 9 drop out children in the age group of 9 to 13 was admitted to non-formal schools and 21 drop out children was admitted to formal schools. 10 youth were admitted to vocational trainings with the financial support from the organization and 15 children were financially supported to continue their education. 15 women underwent family planning operation motivated by our staff. 530 women are organized into groups and are taught income generation activities, sensitized on various issues like sex, law, health, environment, hygiene, etc. The community is motivated to work in harmony by conducting play melas and celebrating Independence Day, Republic Day and Women’s Day.
1229 children, 537 youth and 944 women are benefiting from this programme.

Rehabilitation of Prisoners: 1793 families are counseled. Training was given on vermi compost production to 1585 inmates.763 senior inmates of the Trichy Central Prison were benefited by the hygiene kit supplied to those who have nobody to care for them. 456 Children are provided with education support.

POONJOLAI – The Home for Children: 22 children are in the home this year. The children are admitted to the nearby High School in Kodappu. The children below the age of six are sent to the nursery.

Go to School Programme: 17746 Children of age 6-14 are provided with school bags, uniforms, note books, stationery, etc to help them meet out the additional costs incurred in attending schools regularly.185 children are financially supported to pay their school fees and other expenses.12 Motivation camps are conducted and regular follow ups are made to ensure that the drop out rate reduces. 

Rehabilitation of Child Labour: The programme benefits 174 children through Six Special schools in Arangoor, Musiri, Kamatchipatti, Amoor, Kodiyampalayam and Ariyamangalam. During the current year 102 children are admitted to regular schools. Besides formal education, they are also taught vocations like tailoring, craft, etc. yoga, music and dance. The project is funded by CHEERS of Trichy District Administration. “Nila Palli”s were conducted on the Full Moon Day to create awareness among the parents about child Labours in Amoor and Arangoor.

Special Seminar for Child Labours: A special seminar was conducted to the child labourers by New Life, Regional Directorate Central Board for Workers Education, Madurai. 40 children attended this seminar from Kamatchipatti, Amoor and Musiri. The programme motivated the children to continue their studies.

Livelihood Promotion Programme: In the path of achieving its aim to mainstream the women, New Life’s Livelihood Promotion Program has helped its self help group members to get a credit to the tune of Rs.45.21 Lakhs in the current year from various nationalized banks and as a result 400 women have either started their own micro-enterprise or utilized the amount as working capital for their existing enterprises.

Micro Insurance: During this financial year 841 members are covered for life and health hazards.

Organic Farming: 160 farmers in Musiri Block in the year 2007-2008 were practicing the principle of organic farming.

Adult Literacy Program: 133 women are benefited by the adult literacy program during the year 2007-08.

Health Program: 8690 members are given subsidized consultation by the Physician in our Board and a Gynecologist on obtaining the Health Card issued by the organization. 3 health camps are conducted.

Special Events:
Exposure for Staff: The staff of the ECCP programme of the organization was taken out to CERTCO, Thiruchendur in the month of April for an exposure. 

Picnic to ELC children: 22 children from our early learning centers were taken out to the Deer Park and 46 to Ibrahim Park in Trichy for a picnic. The children enjoyed the picnic.

Nila Palli: Nila Palli is an awareness cum motivation programme to the child labourers and their parents. Games, cultural programmes and a public meeting are conducted in the programme through out the full moon day and the programme ends with a delicious dinner. During the current year, Nila Pallis were conducted in Arangoor and Aamoor child labour schools. 

Independence Day Celebrations in Kajapettai and Uppu Parai: The Independence Day was celebrated in the Kaja Pettai and Uppu Parai areas. The youth club and the members of the self help group in this areas, cooperated with the organization in celebrating the function and made it a grand success. Flag was hoisted and games and cultural programmes were conducted to bring out the talents of the children. Prizes were given for the winners. In Uppu Parai, a dance team was formed by the youth on that day.

Prisoners welfare Day: Prisoners welfare day were celebrated in Central Prison Trichy on 2nd October. Hygiene kit with Soap, Paste, Brush, Comb, Talcum Powder, Coconut oil, Biscuit were provided to senior citizens in the Prison. 150 senior inmates who were not visited by their friends and relatives were selected and were presented with the kit.

Workshop on entrepreneurship development: A workshop on entrepreneurship development was conducted on 10.10.2007 for the NGO representatives and students of Social Work in the AICUF House, Trichy. The programme was the joint initiative of New Life, IRDC and CSIM.

Breast Cancer Awareness Rally: 458 SHG members of New life and staff participated in the Breast Cancer Awareness Rally organized in Trichy on 14.10.07 from Mambala Salai to Anna Salai by the voluntary organizations in Trichy. 

Community Play Mela: A community play mela and a rally insisting on the importance of traditional games and plays was organized by New Life and HUWAD at zonal level in Tharapuram for the NGO partners of Terre des Hommes, Netherlands in Tamil Nadu. This was telecast in the local channels and SUN News TV. This was followed up by the National meet in MEC Campus, Mathagondapalli. New Life was awarded with a rolling trophy and a certificate for best zone and coordination of the year during this meet.

Children’s Day: Children’s Day was celebrated at the Barstal School in Pudukottai and New Life team participated in the celebrations.

Pongal Day Celebrations in Sathyamoorthy Nagar: The Pongal Day, a festival of the farmers celebrated in Tamil Nadu was celebrated by the organization in Sathya Moorthy Nagar Games were conducted to women and children. The youth club and the self help group members actively participated in the celebrations.

Republic Day Celebrations in Vamadam: Games were conducted to women and children. Sweets were distributed to the people. 

Women’s Day Celebrations in Kodappu: World women’s day was celebrated in the Kodappu Village. 158 women participated and fun games were conducted. A meeting was conducted.
